What is the difference between EVOO and high phenolic EVOO?
High phenolic is the name for scientifically measured extra virgin olive oil relating directly to the health claim regulation (432 / 2012)“olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress”
Legislation clarifies that only extra virgin olive oils containing at least 5mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives (e.g. oleuropein, oleocanthal and tyrosol) per 20g of olive oil may use this health claim. This means that only olive oils with total polyphenols of 250 mg per kg can put a health claim on the label.
These health-promoting properties have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-atherogenic, anti-thrombotic effects which have been shown to reduce morbidity and reduce risk / slow down the development of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases as well as cancer. Thousands of published studies have helped connect the dots between daily intake of high quality extra virgin olive oil and improved health.
Why is Extra Virgin Olive Oil healthier than other vegetable and seed oils?
Vegetable and seed oils don't contain the abundance of unique polyphenols only found in EVOO such as oleocanthal and oleacein which has have been used in many scientific studies for their the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Why is high Phenolic Olive Oil more expensive?
To preserve the maximum phenolic content of the olives, the olives need to be harvested very early in the season. The olives are very small at this point and contain very little oil so the yield needed to produce each bottle is far greater than for a lower quality oil. Quality over quantity.
Is my Olive Oil fresh?
Yes. The olive oil is kept in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. It is bottled to order, we order every few months to bring the freshest EVOO to your kitchen.
How much should I take?
According to the EU health claim, 20g per day of a high phenolic olive continuing 250mg/kg. The Governor contains far higher than this. We recommend 1 Tablespoon for prevention and 2 tablespoons a day if taking for a health condition.
If you’re using a regular olive oil, you’ll need to increase your daily dosage.
Does Olive Oil go off?
Yes. Unlike wine it doesn’t improve with age. EVOO has a shelf life of 2 years from its harvest date. Premium olive oils containing high levels of polyphenol antioxidants increases its shelf life. Once a bottle is opened the oil will begin to degrade so it is recommended to be used within 3 months to gain the most health benefits.
How should I store my oil
To prolong the shelf life, store in a cool, dark place like your kitchen cupboard. We recommended keeping it in its protective box which will protect it form heat, light and oxygen.
Once opened use within 3 months for for maximum taste and health benefits.
Is my Olive Oil ok if it has frozen?
Yes. Extra Virgin Olive Oil will freeze when temperatures drop below 45 degrees. This doesn't affect the oil in any way and if fact it can help to preserve the healthful compounds.
Is the Governor EVOO organic
Yes it is.

Benefits of olive oil
High phenolic EVOO is the healthiest and highest quality extra virgin olive oil.
HP olive oils are made from unripe green olives harvested early in the season, which are processed using specific methods that preserve their high phenolic content. They must pass sensory and chemical tests plus a chemical analysis of polyphenol levels.
The Governor was the first ever to be awarded the health claim. It was scientifically tested at the University of Athens and compared with the results of 700 other olive oil samples, from 30 different olive varieties from around the world. It was found to contain 7 x higher than the average samples.
The Governor EVOO contains consistently between 1000-1800 mg/kg (total phenols) 1000 mg/kg (Oleocanthal and Oleacein) These phenolic antioxidant compounds have been found to possess powerful anti-inflammatory properties which have been associated with decreased inflammation, improved cognitive function, lower incidence of diabetes, and improved cardiovascular health.
In comparison to other extra virgin olive oils you may find in the shops they can vary significantly and range from anything between 50-250mg/kg
