Father's Day & Men's Health: The Science Behind High-Phenolic Olive Oil
Monday 15th June is the start of Men's Health week which runs through to Father's day. It shines a spotlight on men's health, along with celebrating and showing appreciation for the fathers, grandfathers and father figures who have shaped our lives.
While many Father's Day gifts are quickly forgotten, some gifts have the potential to make a difference every single day. One of them might just be sitting in the kitchen cupboard.
Extra virgin olive oil is one of the most researched foods in the world, and growing evidence suggests that high-quality, high-phenolic olive oil may play an important role in supporting cardiovascular health, healthy ageing and overall wellbeing.
Why Men's Health Matters
Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death among men in the UK and worldwide. High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, obesity and type 2 diabetes continue to affect millions of men, often without obvious symptoms until problems arise.
While no single food can prevent disease, dietary choices play a major role in long-term health outcomes.
One dietary pattern that consistently stands out is the Mediterranean diet, with extra virgin olive oil at its heart.
What Makes High-Phenolic Olive Oil Different?
Extra virgin olive oil contains naturally occurring compounds called polyphenols. These powerful antioxidants are responsible for the peppery sensation often felt at the back of the throat when tasting a fresh, high-quality olive oil. They are also what distinguishes high-phenolic olive oils from many standard supermarket oils.
In fact, olive oil polyphenols are the subject of an authorised health claim by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which states:
"Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress."
Oxidative stress occurs naturally within the body and can contribute to the ageing process and the development of chronic diseases. Protecting blood lipids from oxidative damage is considered important for maintaining cardiovascular health.
The Evidence for Heart Health
Perhaps the strongest evidence surrounding extra virgin olive oil relates to cardiovascular health.
One of the largest and most influential nutrition studies ever conducted, the PREDIMED trial, followed more than 7,000 participants at high cardiovascular risk. Researchers found that those following a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil experienced significantly fewer major cardiovascular events compared with those following a low-fat diet.
More recently, researchers analysing long-term data from the same study found that participants consuming the highest amounts of extra virgin olive oil had a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular events than those consuming the least.
For men, whose cardiovascular risk tends to increase with age, these findings are particularly relevant.
Healthy Blood Vessels Matter
Healthy circulation plays an important role throughout the body. Blood vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs, support physical performance and help maintain overall cardiovascular function.
Research suggests that the Mediterranean diet, rich in extra virgin olive oil, may help support healthy blood vessel function through its combination of monounsaturated fats and antioxidant-rich polyphenols.
This is one reason why olive oil has become such a central focus of modern nutrition research.
Supporting Healthy Ageing
One of the reasons scientists continue to study Mediterranean populations is their ability to maintain health and vitality into later life.
Researchers believe that a combination of factors, including a diet rich in vegetables, legumes, fish and extra virgin olive oil helps reduce the cumulative effects of oxidative stress over time.
High-phenolic olive oil is particularly interesting because it contains substantially higher levels of polyphenols than many conventional oils. These compounds help protect the oil itself from oxidation and may also contribute to the health benefits associated with regular consumption.
Quality Matters
Not all olive oils contain the same levels of beneficial compounds. Polyphenol content can vary dramatically depending on olive variety, harvest timing, production methods and storage conditions.
Early-harvest olive oils, such as The Governor, are produced from olives picked while still green and rich in polyphenols. The result is an intensely flavoured oil with a distinctive peppery finish and naturally high levels of antioxidant compounds. In other words, that peppery sensation isn't a flaw, it's often a sign of the very compounds that have attracted so much scientific attention.
A Father's Day Gift With Meaning
This Father's Day, instead of another gadget or novelty gift, why not give something that combines flavour, tradition and science?
A bottle of premium high-phenolic extra virgin olive oil is more than just a food product. It is a gift rooted in one of the world's most studied and celebrated dietary traditions for it health giving properties.
